WHAT IS IT? RWR SWEAT AGAIN
Anhidrosis. Normally, horses sweat to cool themselves during hot weather. Anhidrosis, also known as
non-sweating syndrome, dry coat or puffs disease is the term to describe the condition in which horses develop
either partial or complete inability to sweat in the usual way. This inability to sweat leads to the inability of the
horse to maintain its normal body temperature in such a warm environment, which leads to panting, fever and often
results in death of the horse. Anhidrosis is very common today and is seen in numerous tropical countries including
Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, The Philippines, the West Indies including Puerto Rico and
Trinidad, some parts of South America, Northern Australia and the Gulf
States of the USA: Florida to Texas.
WHY WOULD I USE RWR SWEAT AGAIN?
The signs associated with Anhidrosis (other than absence of sweating) include a marked excessive
breathlessness or panting/puffing, such as a resting panting rate of over 30 per minute. Whereas a normal
respiration rate for horses is 10 per minute or thereabouts, for a horse suffering from Anhidrosis, puffing can
be up to 180 per minute on a hot day. The coat also becomes dry, harsh and generally poor in condition and
there may be alopecia, or loss of hair. A horse suffering from this condition will also tend to urinate a lot as
they are not losing fluid by sweating.
WHAT IS IN THE PRODUCT?
Each 8ml Contains: Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Potassium Lodide, Marine Pine extract.
Presentation: Sweat-Again oral paste is available in 30ml graduated, multi-dose syringe.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Zinc is involved as a cofactor in a multitude of enzyme systems; there are in excess of 200 Zinc
There is significant amount of zinc lost in sweat, (Meyer H. 1987 Nutrition of the equine athlete) determined
that the loss of Zinc in sweat to be 20-21mg/1 of sweat and 4-5mg/L of Copper. This can be substantial in
hard working horses particularly in the tropics as well as high levels of Calcium and Copper can reduce
The regulatory NEMO (NK-kappa B Essential modulator) protein has a crucial role in the NF-Kappas B
signaling which contains classical Zinc fingers and Zinc influenced the folding of this protein (Cordier F. et
al. J.Mol. Biol. (2008) 377. 1419) we decided to trial Zinc Chelate with horses with Anhidrosis to see if an
excess of bioavailable Zinc could reverse this, if there was a possible borderline deficiency in Zinc due to
all the above factors.
Our first data and experiments were carried out in 1999 on horses suffering from Anhidrosis and the
supplementation of 300mg of extra Zinc twice a day. After 24 hours the horses showed small signs of
improvement as measured by exercised tolerance, sweating, puffing and coat condition and significantly
improved within 3-5 days.
Since then this product has been used and tested on at least a hundred horses. It is important to keep the
copper to Zinc ratio constant.
